Tournament of Champions
This event first took place in September 2004. The invitations were only confined to prominent poker players, but now this tournament is enriching the players as new pro and protégé. This game is featuring many upgradations against the last year’s WSOP by having a narrative-based career mode, wide range of unlockable poker tools, camera support systems, which allow you to plot your face against the created players, and broadcasters. This table would further permit you for multi-table tournaments giving the impression that this tournament is coming out with many transformations. All the poker aficionados should notice this.
The Tournament of Champions 2006 involved a whopping $2,000,000 prize money with 27 players taking the centre stage. Out of these 27 players, 9 players where from the last year’s WSOP Main Event, 12 players come from winners of the WSOP Main Event of the circuit tournaments, which takes place throughout the year, and another set of 6 players who received exemptions would be included. These players would receive
freeroll entries into the event. Mike Sexton won the 1st place at the 2006 Tournament of Champions winning $1,000,000.
The Concluding Scuffle
The play was underway at the final table, the tournament administrators raised the chips of everyone by 10x including the blinds, which were quickly followed by eliminations. First, it was Andrew Black who sent Gus Hansen reeling to the hut in the 10th place when Andrew’s pouch 9's held up to Gus' A-K. Then he was quickly followed by Daniel Bergsdorf and Kido Pham in 9th and 8th place respectively.
Chris Ferguson could last only till 7th position until Darrell Dicken’s pocket of 8s overcame his pocket of 6’s with the board finally offering no assistance for either player. Darrell thought he had an outside chance of winning before he was outplayed by Mike Sexton. Darrell finally finished at 6th place. Andrew Black was eliminated at No.5 when his K9’s (all bet) was called over by Mike Matusow with his K’s. Here too, the board was hardly assisting either players.
Chris Reslock finished at 4 exhibiting good show. Mike Matusow who was the defending champion (inner of last year’s tournament) unfortunately couldn’t successfully defend this year’s title. He finished at No.3 showing once again superb promise. Ultimately, the tournament came down to 2 players Mike Sexton and Daniel Negreanu to prove their mettle. In the beginning, Mike limped in and Daniel raised. This was soon followed with a re-raise from Mike. Then Daniel called and the flop showed 10d 8d and 4s respectively.
Subsequently, Daniel went all-in holding Oh
Jh, which was quickly called by Mike who was holding A’s. The turn card turned out to be A enabling Mike Sexton three-of-a-kind and title. This heads up battle lasted for almost 6 hours 30 minutes before Mike Sexton eventually claimed the title.
